Mussorgsky - Pictures At An Exhibition
Luxury Villa Sainte-Maxime, France
17:30 - Drinks reception
18:30 - Concert
Virtuoso pianist and festival artistic director Pavel Timofeyevsky opens the festival with Pictures at an Exhibition, Mussorgsky’s monumental piano cycle, performed alongside projections of the visionary images by Viktor Hartmann that inspired it.
In this opening talk, Pavel explores the life and artistic legacy of Modest Mussorgsky a composer whose uncompromising musical language set him apart from many of his contemporaries. Often criticised in his lifetime for his unconventional techniques, Mussorgsky developed a strikingly original approach to harmony, rhythm, and musical narration.
His influence can be traced not only in the colouristic imagination of later Russian composers such as Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev but also in the evolving harmonic language and atmosphere of early European twentieth-century music such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
For this performance, the villa transforms into a living gallery, where sound and image merge in an immersive, atmospheric experience.
